The European Union WaTER Towers Programme 2016

1. Introduction

The Water Towers Protection and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (WaTER Towers) Programme  was funded by the European Union. Earmarked to benefit eleven counties, the programme covered two of the five main Water Towers in Kenya namely: Mt. Elgon and Cherangany Hills and their ecosystems. 

The programme had multiple stakeholders as implementing partners including Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and The National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS)

2. The PR Objectives / Challenge

To create visibility and awareness for the initiative targeting the various communities and stakeholders in the regions and counties where the programme would be implemented.

Highlight the issues and challenges facing the water towers in the country as well as the mitigation actions as proposed by the EU and its implementing partners.

3. Achievements

Successful Pick-up rate by media across all platforms of the event press release, thus providing wide coverage for the launch event. The launch garnered the highest publicity for the European Union in Kenya in 2016. 

Successfully drove reach and engagement for the event online via the #WaterTowers that was the most trending and viewed topic twice on the day.
